Shiloh has received the prestigious 2022 Altair Enlighten Technology Award for its ShilohCore® Acoustic Patch Laminate Technology. Presented in association with the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the Altair Enlighten Award honors the greatest sustainability and lightweighting advancements that successfully reduce carbon footprint, mitigate water and energy consumption, and leverage material reuse and recycling efforts. ShilohCore® was recognized in the Enabling Technologies category, in conjunction with General Motors as the supporting customer for development, early adoption and commercialization.

“It is a privilege to accept this highly respected award on behalf of the entire team. The development and validation of ShilohCore® technology is a key milestone on our path to a carbon-neutral footprint. I want to express our gratitude to Altair for this recognition, and the development teams at General Motors, Wayne State University, University of Tennessee, and our talented engineering team at Shiloh for your many contributions in bringing this winning technology to market.” said Steve Lin, executive director of engineering & technology for the performance stamping vertical of Shiloh Industries and Dura Automotive Systems.

ShilohCore® Acoustic Patch Laminate Technology is a sustainable approach to optimize the acoustic characteristics of BEV, HEV, and ICE vehicles. Its noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) damping performance is comparable to fully laminated vehicle approaches but lowers weight, carbon emissions, and costs. Patented ShilohCore® NVH damping performance can be tuned to achieve required temperature ranges and target frequencies while maintaining vehicle range efficiency and reducing raw material usage. “The winners of this year’s Enlighten Award– which mark the award’s 10th anniversary – showcase the latest revolutionary technology that reduces carbon footprint, minimizes waste, and maximizes renewable energy,” said Richard Yen, senior vice president, global industry verticals and sales enablement team, Altair. “We hope this award continues to inspire future generations to ‘think light’ for many decades to come.” ShilohCore® technology is now in serial production, with content featured across more than 1.1 million annual units, supplying nine vehicle models worldwide.

The leapfrog technology can reduce interior noise by 3dB-7dB over a wide frequency range, decrease damping treatment mass by 45%, and cut overall assembly costs by up to 20%. Furthermore, unlike traditional post-process asphaltic patches and liquid-applied sound-damping products, ShilohCore’s proprietary formula allows for targeted patch coverage even in challenging vertical surface applications, without gap variation and with no need for clearance zones around mounting studs or assembly flanges.

ShilohCore’s innovative solutions can be used with coated or uncoated steels, stainless steel or aluminum, making it a natural fit for lightweighting strategies. Its positive environmental traits, such as 0% VOC emission with minimal waste, assist manufacturers in meeting sustainability goals.
